We Did So Well I'm Bored, What Now?

by Alex Charfen

Episode Description

A lot of our clients do well in their business then find themselves bored. This typically happens after pressure and noise are reduced, we’ve simplified, and everything is in a good place. Then they start to wonder what’s next and feel the absence of knowing what they should be doing. In the last few weeks, even I wondered what I should be focused on. Our team was absolutely crushing it, but that left me feeling a little bored and wondering what I should focus on.

Just like I remind my clients, I recently had to remind myself that our days should continuously be evolving. We should always be changing what we do and building around what the business needs. I want you to ask yourself this question: how do I make this easier on me? If you keep asking yourself this question, you will consistently and systematically fix the deficit created by success.

This is a podcast my team has wanted me to record for a while because it covers a question we get so often from our clients. We help clients put in place a strategic plan so the team knows where they're going, a communication system so everyone understands it and an infrastructure building system so they're always creating the company around them that they need to. And here's what happens within a short while after working with us, we get a call where we have this interesting question, "Hey, my team's killing it, things are going great. What do I do now? I don't have as much to do. I'm not as significant. What happens now?" I'll tell you in just a sec.

I'm Alex Charfen and this is the Momentum Podcast made for empire builders, game changers, trailblazers, shot takers, record breakers, world makers and creators of all kinds. Those among us who can't turn it off and don't know why anyone would want to.

We challenge complacency, destroy apathy, and we are obsessed with creating momentum so we can roll over bureaucracy and make our greatest contribution. Sure, we pay attention to their rules, but only so that we can bend them, break them, then rewrite them around our own will.

We don't accept our destiny, we define it. We don't understand defeat because you only lose if you stop and we don't know how. While the rest of the world strives for average and clings desperately to the status quo, we are the minority, the few who are willing to hallucinate. There could be a better future and instead of just daydreaming of what could be, we endure the vulnerability and exposure it takes to make it real. We are the evolutionary hunters, clearly the most important people in the world because entrepreneurs are the only source of consistent, positive human evolution and we always will be.

I think I waited for so long to record this podcast because when I share with people at events or in discussions or when I'm sitting down with someone that one of the most common issues we have with our clients is that we help them get things organized, get a strategic plan in place, get the team to understand what's going on. We significantly reduce noise and one of the most common, in fact it's probably the most common issue we have with our clients, is that they very quickly step into a place where things are easier and better for them and they no longer feel overwhelmed. And as a result, they start feeling less significant and literally wonder what they should do. This is one of the biggest issues we deal with. In fact, it's kind of interesting because I'm dealing with a little bit of it myself.

Every one of us as entrepreneurs does. You know, in the last two years, Cadey and I've taken a company from really me, Cadey, and one other person to now we have a team of about 15. We've gone from no revenue in what we wanted to be doing to now we're over $2 million a year, approaching $3 million a year in recurring revenue on what we want to be doing and things are going extraordinarily well. And in the last few weeks I've had the question like, "Hey, wait, what should I be focused on? What should I be doing?" And it does, it rattles you. And it makes you feel less significant and it does take away a little bit of momentum. So not only do our clients feel this, but I've actually had the experience in just the last few weeks of going through the same thing. And so here's what I had to remind myself.

The same thing that we remind our clients, like I had to meditate about this, think about it. I actually did some journaling on a plane because here's what we should think of as entrepreneurs.

Our days should be constantly evolving. We should constantly be changing what we do. And sometimes that means days and things and noise and tactics will get easier for us because we should be building around what the business needs. We should be filling in what the business needs. And as it grows we should be driving that growth.

And the epiphany that I had a long time ago was that success creates deficit and growth creates complexity. So as the CEO of a business, as the entrepreneur in charge, you must be creating space for what comes next. So what you should constantly be doing as the person running the business is asking the question that no one asks, this is the question you should be asking, but entrepreneurs are almost allergic to it and it will change your life when you start asking it, it will change how you work. It will increase your impact. It will give you less stress, you will have less cortisols. However, as entrepreneurs we're terrified of asking the question, how do I make this easier on me?

Let that sink in.

When was the last time you asked the question how do I make my business easier on me? And I don't mean like how do I make it easier to make this phone call? I mean, how do I make this game changing easier on me? How do I get rid of the things that stress me out? How do I make it so that I'm no longer doing anything I don't want to do? How do I make it so that I'm in my zone of genius 100% of the time? How do I make it so that running this business is easier on me? Because when we start to ask that, here's what happens, we consistently and systematically clear the space so that we can fix the deficit created by success. So that we can calm the complexity created by growth. We must be constantly and systematically creating time for ourselves as entrepreneurs because in a fast growth company, two days are never the same.

What you did today should not be what you do tomorrow because in a fast growth company your activity actually drives the growth of the overall business. And I want us all to understand that. I want us all to be very clear on the fact that in a fast growth company, what we do on a day to day basis dictates how the company grows. And this is why this is so important. So number one, what got you here is going to shred you moving forward. So you have to modify and change and you have to offload things to your team because we all, and I talked about this in my last podcast, as entrepreneurs, we have an addiction to stress. We have an addiction to activity and what we have to do is release that addiction so that we can clear space so that as the business needs us, we are there.

The second thing I want you to understand is when you evolve, so does your company, but typically not before. I'll say it again. When you evolve so does your company but typically not before, because you are going to create the company that you are capable of creating today. When you start opening space for yourself, when you start taking care of yourself, when you start creating time so that you can think, when you get yourself out of overwhelm, that's when your business is truly going to change. It's truly going to explode because you will start evolving. And here's what's interesting, if you constantly ask the question, how do I make this easier on myself? You will constantly fill in with who should do the things you should no longer be doing. So you will through your evolution and discarding, offloading, getting rid of the things that you do not want to do, making this easier on yourself. That in and of itself will drive the growth of your business.

Then the last thing I want you to remember about your business is you are the most important person in the business period. So the more we make this easier on you, the more we create an infrastructure and a team around you so that the business grows. And when you feel that relief, when you feel that lack of certainty, that lack of need, that lack of urgency, you have to hard wire that to you as a CEO are doing the right things. While it may feel precarious, it's actually proof that you are succeeding as a CEO and you should continue to do exactly what you're doing.

So here's what I want you to know. Number one, when you are emotionally attached to the activity you provide to your business, it will kill you.

Be emotionally attached to the success of your business, not to what you do in the business. Release what you do and let the business tell you where you're needed.

Second, evolution. The changing of what we do, the modifying of who we are, the creating higher and best use for ourself is the very fabric of what creates growth. It is a constant part of growth. There is no growth without evolution. There is no growth without change, and so understand that that evolution, that growth is what will actually drive your business. And this is a big one. If things aren't changing for you as the entrepreneur, if what you need to do every day isn't changing, then you're doing it wrong. Because you're not evolving your activity in the business. You're not actually modifying what you do in the business and you are the most important person in the business.

And if you haven't yet, I say this all time, go to, download the Billionaire Code matrix and the ebook and take a look at exactly what you should be focused on right now. And anything else, offload it to someone else so that you can grow and scale your business and make a massive impact.

We hear this all the time from our clients, "What do I do now?" Well, I want you to know the second you get there, when it happens to you, you're going to have a different emotional reaction to it because it's not going to surprise you. We're talking about it right now. So you're going to know that when this happens, not if, that is a sign that you are moving in the right direction and you are on the path to success.

Go to, download a copy of the Billionaire Code, a matrix and of the book The Billionaire Code Decoded. Figure out exactly where you are on the billionaire code, focus on those things for now, so that you can grow your business. And then don't be surprised when things get easier on you. And then start to ask the question, how do I actually make this easier on myself? And you will see your company, your impact, and your income grow., we look forward to seeing you.
